Menu for 4-9 Month Old Infants

This pattern is only a guide. Some babies won't want this much. Others will be hungrier and need a bit more. Start with the smaller quantities and work up to the larger amounts when your baby seems ready for more food. Remember to offer the solid foods after nursing or feeding formula.

4-5 Months

Meal Times Serving Sizes Suggested Daily Amounts
At this age, baby is likely not eating at specific meal times Babies are usually eating 6-7 breast milk or formula feedings of 5-6 oz. (150-180 mL) each per day You may choose to introduce small amounts of infant cereal at breakfast and supper - begin with 1 tsp. (5 mL) and increase amounts slowly to 1-2 Tbsp. (15-30 mL).

Remember, do not force your baby to eat. Babies usually let you know when they have had enough to eat. Watch for signs like turning head away, refusing to eat more, falling asleep and playing instead of eating. Also, do not use food as a reward or punishment.

*Snack
The time between meals is often too long for babies given their small stomachs and high energy requirements. Snacks between meals help to fill this gap. Stick to nutritious foods from the four food groups.
